What happened to cause this recall?
Children may be able to override the lock and gain access to contents of a cabinet, posing the risk of exposure to hazardous items. Since late 2008, The First Years® has received seven reports of latches breaking, which may permit children to gain access to the contents of a cabinet too easily. The voluntary recall is being announced to alert parents to the potential for a latch to break, which could enable children to gain access to the contents of cabinets.

Have there been any injuries related to the product malfunctions?
No, there have been no reports of injuries related to recalled latches. The voluntary recall is being announced to alert parents to the potential for a latch to break, which could enable children to gain access to the contents of cabinets.

What should I do if I have one of the recalled Swing Locks?
Consumers should immediately remove the latches from cabinets and record the product date code from the back of each latch. When removing the latches, consumers should take special care to store hazardous items out of the reach of children. There is no need for consumers to return the swing locks. The First Years will provide a $5 coupon toward the purchase of another product on The First Years website for each set of affected swing locks (maximum of two sets of locks per household for online redemption).

If I have a latch lock with the American Red Cross logo on it, but no longer have the original packaging, should I assume that it is included in the recall or are there similar-looking branded products that are not part of the recall? If so, how can I tell tell the difference?
